Great result for Andersen Walko and Pi at the Star Mazda Championship
July 3, 2005. Fountain, Colorado

Congratulations to Andersen Walko Racing, one of our premier club teams who scored an excellent set of results in the Star Mazda series at Pikes Peak International speedway last weekend.  In Round Five of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear, eighteen-year old Robbie Pecorari lead the way to edge out his sixteen-year old Andersen Walko Racing team mate by 0.038 to earn his first Star Mazda Championship victory.

The team runs a total of 4 drivers in the series, their result in the 75 lap event at the one-mile Pikes Peak oval were outstanding!

23 Robbie Pecorari 1st
12 Graham Rahal 2nd
26 Jonathan Klein 6th
22 Pablo Donoso 7th

The team are using the well proven Pi Delta Clubman data logger and the X Sport steering wheel display to get the most out of both car and driver.

More information about the race series go to their website http://www.starmazda.com/

Taking advantage of a late race caution period that would lead to a three lap shootout to the finish, Pecorari would dive past Rahal with two laps to go and hold off his team-mate in the run to the finish. "My car would work really good on cold tires so when the caution flag came out I knew I would be able to make a run," Pecorari said. "I knew if I went inside I could get by and just worked on the timing. I still like roadcourses best, but like ovals a little bit more than before."

The dash to the finish would come about when Scott Jenkins, who entered the event fourth in points, spun and hit the wall in turn four on lap 68. Rahal, who had found a bit of breathing space, would thread the needle to get through the incident but watch the gap he had built up evaporate. "That last caution came out at the worst time, " a disappointed Rahal would comment. "I had some breathing room for the closing laps, but once the gap was gone I knew that Robbie would be right there because he has been strong all weekend. It's frustrating to be so close to victory only to have it slip away, but at least it was a team-mate that got the chequered flag."

As the series approaches the halfway point in two weeks time at Infineon Raceway, Matos continues atop the championship with 203 points. Sitting in second place is Robbie Pecorari with 175 points while Graham Rahal drops a position to third with 172 points.

In the expert series championship, for drivers aged 30-44, Golden, Colorado resident Micky Gilbert would earn the victory and maintain his first place in the championship with 87 points to Mike Anderson's 67 points.

Pi Supports Best Of British

It was an event of varied weather and varied winners at Oulton Park during the 17th - 19th June, however, there can be no confusion over who leads the championship after four meetings of the 2005 Dunlop MSA BTCC. Matt Neal picked up a win and two second place results for Team Halfords at the Cheshire track, reinforcing his lead at the top of the Drivers' Championship points table. There were also wins for Jason Plato and Tom Chilton, three different winners in a single day for the first time in 2005. The following is a brief summary of the three races:

Round 10 - The first race of the day saw Jason Plato score the first Seat Sport UK victory of the season. The 2001 champion led the race from lights to flag, however did have to fend off a late charge from Team Halfords' Matt Neal.

Round 11 - Round 11 started with a track temperature of 41 degrees and the sun shining down on the Cheshire circuit. Almost as soon as the race began however, the clouds descended and rain seemed to threaten. With the track still dry Matt Neal battled to earn his fifth win of the season.

Round 12 - "Chaos" could be used to describe the final round of the 2005 Dunlop MSA BTCC. A thunderous downpour soaked drivers, cars and track alike; ultimately causing further racing events after the official BTCC rounds to be canceled. The new driving conditions caused many mishaps, accidents and a crash when Mark Proctor ploughed into a stationary Astra Sport Hatch while following the safety car! Ultimately however it was Tom Chilton who survived to drive a sensible, controlled race to the finish line, an excellent result for the 20 year old.

All British touring cars run the Pi Scrutineering Loggers and host various other Pi loggers to ensure performance improvement.

VX Racing also use Pi data on their website to put visitors to the site into the driving seat at any of the tracks that the BTCC visits during the season.  Click Here to go to the VX Racing site and choose your track. The site gives a very clear description on the interior of the Astra Sport Hatch BTC and the equipment used.

Czech Mate

True to reputation the Automotodrom Brno track in the Czech republic gave the FIA GT Championship an exciting race, made increasingly unpredictable by the weather, with a heavy shower drenching the track mid-race.  Practice and qualifying were both dry however the race was both wet and dry making strategy imperative. The challenging circuit saw victory go to the Pi equipped Ferrari 550M of Larbre Competition that finished almost an entire minute ahead of its 2nd place rival. Further impressive Pi customer results included GLPK Racing in 4th place, Russian Age Racing in 8th place and Rock Media Motors in 10th place. All of these teams were equipped with Workshop and Toolbox software as well as Sigma MCU5 data logging systems (apart from the Rock Media Motors team who opted for the Sigma Elite Junior with App card). Also included in these cars' arsenals were alarm satellite modules and gear/shift light satellite modules.

The victorious Ferrari 550M was equipped with a Sigma MCU5 data logging system, Workshop and Toolbox software and both an alarm satellite module and a gear/shift satellite module. Pectel supplied the vehicles T10S engine controller; this equipment has aided the Larbre Competition team in defeating all opponents every single time it has taken to the ominous Autornotodrom Brno track.

We Are The Champions... Of The World

Kevin Kalkhoven co-owner of the Champ Car World Series was on deck at Portland last weekend to witness his race team's first win. Kalkhoven briefed Champ Car's team owners on the plans taking shape for next year and reassured fans that the Champ Car future was not only secure but looked set to expand significantly.

To view the official Champ World Car Series website click here.

This weekend the Champ Car World Series is set to take on the notorious Cleveland race track. This 94 lap track is one of the more difficult on the calendar, for the simple reason that the wide open spaces allow virtually no reference points from which the drivers can judge their turn-in points or apexes for the corners. For the same reason it is also provides a spectacular view for the fans, since the whole circuit can be viewed from the grandstand.

The Champ Car World Series previous event took place in Portland . Pole winner and runaway early leader Justin Wilson was on excellent form until his oil pump failed. In Cleveland , Wilson looks to get his season back on the right track. However ranked third in the Champ Car points standings, he may very well find Cleveland IS the right track.

Wilson a fan of the Cleveland track had these comments in regards to the upcoming race "We know we can lead," he said. "We've been strong in most races this year and I love Cleveland . Todd (Malloy, Wilson 's race engineer) has a good record of putting out a good car for Cleveland so you put the two together and we can go and do it. We've got to just keep putting ourselves at the front and see what we can do."

All Champ Cars are equipped with a host of Pi technology. The systems onboard include Sigma Data loggers with steering wheel dashes. P900 Telemetry and Toolbox data analysis. Pi ToolBox ensures race engineer's requirement for fast, efficient and effective analysis of both logged and real time telemetry data is met. With Pi Toolbox, solutions can be applied with both speed and accuracy every single time.

Dan Wheldon

At the age of four, Dan Wheldon began racing go-karts and moved through the ranks quickly when he began competing in the European formula. In 1999, he moved to the U.S. and immediately made impact in the U.S. F2000 series. Wheldon has captured the Rookie of the Year title in every series he has competed in since arriving in America and has now conquered the 89th Indianapolis 500, his greatest achievement to date.

Wheldon was optimistic about his chances at the Indianapolis 500 giving respect to the track he was about to face as well as his team. His record purse of $10,304,815 was certainly an additional bonus to the fact he is the first Brit to win the Indianapolis 500 since Graham Hill in 1966. Before the race he was quoted as saying "we will challenge for a victory" and that challenge certainly proved successful on May 29th 2005.

New Cheaper Club Wheel speed sensor from piXpress: 21A-0144

The wheelspeed sensors has always been a consumable item.  When you've spent the time to set the wheel speed sensor gap to 0.4 to 0.8 mm and then the sensor gets damaged in an unplanned trip into the wall, it's an expensive and time consuming process to replace the sensor.  We've found a Great solution to this speed sensor problem and its cheaper too! The new Pi Club wheel speed sensor (part number 21A-0144) is a direct plug and play replacement for the existing sensor and has the following benefits:
  • Cheaper at  £55 or $110 (compared to £95 or $190 for the previous sensor)
  • Increased sensor to trigger gap: up to 4mm  (compared to 0.8mm max  with the old sensor )
  • Setup LED on back of sensor; check installation by simply spinning the wheel and watching the led flash, no need to grab the laptop anymore
  • Longer Lasting - the new sensor is able to survive far more knocks and gravel bashing than before; trial sensors have lasted a full racing season and been given plenty of abuse in the process!

"What's on the way from piXpress?"

Interport, from Pi

This little gadget will allow Pi data loggers and dashes to be easily installed into  most modern cars, just plug in and play! The Interport requests data from the cars ECU and then generates a serial stream containing this data, plus information from an internal 2-axis accelerometer, beacon receiver and a GPS receiver if connected.

This data stream can be used by  the following piXpress devices:
  • the  piXpress X Sport dash giving a very fast and simple to install in-car display showing information about speeds, revs, gear position, temps, alarms, qualifying segment times as well as a simple offload to the Outing Report manager application.
  • the new Compact Logger for set-up free data logging, data is analysed in Club Expert Windows software.
  • Clubman and Delta Lite data loggers, the data is received just like a standard ECU serial stream. Requires matching profile in the logger.
  • Lap top computer - the Interport Data View software displays all parameters that are present on the Interport data stream, this software packages comes as standard with any Interport system
The time saved and simplicity of the Interport installation will open markets that Pi has not been in a position to sell into in the past. Many automotive manufactures bench mark their cars or performance products against their competitors, the Interport and Pi Data logger combination will allow these manufacturers to easily gather and compare data from different vehicles.

Available Soon - call 01954 253600, ask for Jason Watkins for more details.

Compact Logger from piXpress

Aimed at the entry-level data logging market; the guy who wants more than the  piXpress X Sport dash alone can give him but does not need the capabilities of the Delta Clubman logger. The Compact Logger need s no setup; it simply takes an input serial stream that is generated by the installed X Sport dash or the Interport unit. This data is stored on a memory card in the Compact logger. After an outing the  data card is removed from the logger and plugged into a  USB card reader; the data on the card is automatically transferred to the PC, the user adds details such as driver name, venue name and enters any  outing specific comments. These details are stored with the offloaded data ready to be viewed in the Club Expert Analysis package. Data logging has never been so simple!

Solutions for the following User Groups will be available:
  • Sports Tuners and Track Day Drivers
  • Race School Solutions
  • Vehicle Manufacturer Solutions
  • Kit Car and Race Vehicle solutions
Available Soon - call 01954 253600, ask for Jason Watkins for more details.

Note - This equipment has been designed for race track use only

The Ultimate Finally

Stephen Shanly arrived at Silverstone with the intention of finishing the season off in style, which he was unable to do in 2003 due to a neck injury. To say he did that, is something of an understatement.

Testing on Friday was an experience that will not be forgotten. Following three days of F1 testing the track was covered in rubber that has to be incompatable with our rubber. With Stephen absent due to a shortage of holiday and his wedding in a couple of weeks, yours truly was required to give his car a test run to check all was well following an engine change. In wet conditions I soon became convinced that I was no longer a racing driver. However I did feel a lot better when the rest of our team confirmed how bad the conditions were. Peter Hobday had the misfortune of being hit from the rear when coming into the pits following one of the numerous red flags. John Harrison accepted the opportunity to drive Doug Harts Chiron as he was away on business in the USA.

Saturday morning was damp but drying for the first qualifying session. All three cars went out on wet tyres. Stephen was straight on it but came in to change onto slicks mid- way through the session. At the end he was the only one to get a sub 60 second lap for this 1.64 mile National track. John Harrison finished 5th, ever concerned that he was driving someone else's car. Peter Hobday stayed on wet tyres and qualified 7th.

The second qualifying at midday was on a dry track and Stephen was a massive 1.437 seconds quicker than David Pegley. John was 5th and Peter 6th. An average speed of 105.55 mph.

The situation did not change for the two races. Stephen lead from lights to flag. He pulled out a massive lead of 20 seconds in both races and in the process set a new lap record which was at the end of the first race. You cannot do better than that. Two poles, two fastest laps, a new lap record and two convincing wins. The performance of a true champion.

Stephens plans for 2005 are uncertain at this stage. Chiron will of course be delighted if he drives for use again. If not, we thank him most sincerely for two wonderful years and wish him well in whatever the future holds.

For the record:-

Stephen Shanly 2004 from 14 races.
10 wins.
11 pole positions.
7 fastest laps.
4 new lap records.

And for Chiron, zero none finishes in two years (35 races).

Doug Hart competed in ten races and had one win, three 2nds and three 3rds. We think this gives a good indication of his ability.

Peter Hobday, without doubt, gets the award for "Most Improved Driver of the Year".

This may be the last Supersports race for 2004, but there are several Britsport races that Peter and Doug will be competing in over the next couple of months. At Silverstone on 10th October Peter will share his car with Alex Buncombe in these 90 minute endurance races. Both Peter and Doug will be out for the race on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit on 20th November.

Peter Hobdays First Win.

On a day of sunshine and showers at this very quick circuit, Peter Hobday won his first ever race in motorsport and the two car Chiron team came home first and second. All this, and in front of the BBC television cameras who are doing a feature on Henry Nickless and his Chiron racing cars.

With the Dunlop Supersport Champion 2004, Stephen Shanly, away getting married in some exotic part of the globe, Chris Buncombe was called in to do this race. Chris is now driving a factory Ferrari 575 for JMB Racing in the FIA World GT Championship and is off to Dubai next week.

Qualifying was wet and Chris put his Chiron on pole by a massive 3.2 seconds. Peter hobday was 3rd behind local champion, Louis Davidson in his 1500 Radical Prosport.

Wet tyres were taken to the collecting area as the showers continued, but were not required. The start of the race can only be described as, unfortunate. Buncombe and Davidson jumped the lights as the rest of the grid held their positions. Buncombe slowed down as the Radical driver disappeared down the track. With the start, not aborted, it was Davidson with a big lead over Buncombe and then Hobday at the end of lap one. The anticipated notification of a 10 second penalty for both drivers was soon shown.

With Buncombe winding in the Radical, Hobday was having a great race with Mike Roberts in his 400bhp Jade. Even with that amount of power on this very quick circuit, he could not get past the Chiron. Buncombe took the lead from Davidson and Hobday then demoted him further to third. That was how they finished on the track but had Chris done enough to compensate for his ten second penality. No, he was 1.4 seconds short, so Peter Hobday won his first ever race in motorsport and was rather pleased to say the least.

Peter will be joined by Alex Buncombe at Silverstone next Sunday in the Britsport race. Three 45 minute races with a ten minute gap between. There will be some serious competition with big horsepower cars from Jade, Juno and Radical. With Peter full of confidence and the very quick Alex Buncombe, they will certainly give them a hard time.

Press Release from Chiron World Sports Cars.

Shanly and Chiron get the double.

A superb performance from Stephen Shanly all day at Donington Park yesterday saw him win his second Dunlop Supersports Championship. The team have also won the Constructors Championship and are delighted that the Teekay Trophy presented by team sponsor, Teekay Couplings, will be coming home.

Qualifying for race one took place in wet conditions and was a new experience for Doug Hart and Peter Hobday. Stephen was in a class of his own in the wet. Second quickest was Doug and third was Peter.

Chirons in first three grid positions. Stephen was nearly four seconds quicker than fourth place Neil Huggins.

The second qualifying took place in dry conditions and Stephen got pole from his team mate, Doug, by half a second. Unfortunately the Juno of Robert Oldershaw caught fire when a fuel hose came loose half way through the session. Despite considerable damage repairs were made and the car appeared on the grid for the first race.

All three Chirons made superb starts and maintained their positions into the first corner. Peter came under pressure from John Harrison and David Pegley and came home fifth. Stephen built up a huge lead of nearly eight seconds at the flag from his team mate. Third place went to John Harrison nearly thirty seconds adrift. Oldershaw, starting from the back of the grid finished a very creditable eighth after his fire. The result left Stephen a few points short of the championship.

Race two was the last race of the day but well worth the wait. Stephen had the situation totally under control and extended his lead through out the race. Oldershaw came second and Doug third. Peter finished seventh on the tail of Harrison .

Two pole positions, two fastest laps, two wins plus the drivers and constructors championship in one day. Not a bad days work for the Chiron Team.

"A superb performance from Stephen all year, and thanks to superb support from all team members our cars were 100% reliable and we have won the championship with two races still to go. Doug Hart has had a race win and will have many more in the future. Peter Hobday has astonished not only his team but just about every one in the paddock with his performance this year. We now look forward to Silverstone and especially 2005" commented Henry Nickless.
